Problem Area: Thin Lips
One of the most noticeable signs of aging is thin lips. You can wear concealer (or sunglasses) to hide crow’s feet, and bangs can hide forehead wrinkles, but since people look at your mouth while you talk, any signs of aging that occur around your lips are going to get noticed.
Why We Get Them
Some of us are born with thin lips (we can’t all be Angelina Jolie, after all), but age is the main culprit behind a less-than-prominent pout. Thinning skin (caused by a dearth of collagen and elastin) means much less lip to smile with. This loss of collagen also causes the V-shaped area of the upper lips (sometimes called the “Cupid’s Bow”) to thin and flatten. In addition, the corners of the mouth begin to turn downwards, a development that can give your face a slightly stern appearance.
Best Treatment Options
Fillers such as Restylane are very effective at improving the appearances of wrinkles and creases around the mouth and lips. It’s also used to give lips that much-coveted volume. Juvederm Ultra is also a good option for adding fullness to the lips.
