Sculptra® biocompatible dermal filler composed of fine particles reconstituted in sterile water. It is injected into the areas of the face with wrinkles, folds and sunken areas to provide fullness and volume. Currently it is FDA approved in the US for patients with human immunodeficiency virus.
What does it treat?
Sculptra is designed to improve the appearance of patients with greater loss of volume and texture in their skin. Wrinkling and volume-loss in the areas around the cheeks, the mouth and the eyes are common areas for treatment with Sculptra. The loss of facial fat, know as lipoatrophy, occurs beneath the surface of the facial skin and causes the cheeks to appear sunken, eyes to appear hollow, and an overall decrease in youthful expression. Sculptra may provide a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. No skin allergy testing is required prior to treatment.
Treatment
Treatment with Sculptra typically involves a series of injections. Topical anesthetic is used to numb the treatment area prior to injection. After the Sculptra is injected, some side effects including swelling will generally set in for several days. Over the course of several weeks the patient's body will form collagen deposits around the fine particles within the Sculptra gel (what is neocollagenesis?). As the patient's body develops this new collagen an improvement can be seen in the treatment area in the fullness and volume of the skin. Currently Sculptra is not FDA approved for the immunocompetent individual. Only your physician can determine which treatment is right for you.
Depending on the amount of fat loss in the facial skin, a patient may need between 3 and 6 treatments to be satisfied with the results. Consult with your doctor to discuss how many treatments will be right for you.
How long does it last?
Clinical studies have shown results may last up to 2 years.
Common side effects from Sculptra are redness and swelling, bruising or bleeding at injection site. These may last from 3 to 17 days, and any lasting effects should be discussed with your doctor. Small bumps on the surface or underneath the surface of the skin may also occur and should be discussed with your doctor.
You should discuss any medications you are on with your doctor prior to treatment as well.
