  • What Is it?

Perlane is the "sister" product of the dermal filler Restylane. They're manufactured and marketed by the same company, Medicis Aesthetics Inc. They also contain the same biocompatible hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar that binds with water to enhance your skin's fullness and elasticity.

The difference between the two fillers is in the size of the hyaluronic particles. Those in Perlane are slightly larger. For that reason, Perlane tends to be used for deeper, larger facial wrinkles and creases.

    What Does It Treat?

Perlane is especially effective at improving the large nasolabial folds between the nose and the mouth and the "worry" lines that can become an unwelcomed permanent fixture on the forehead. The filler is also used to enhance the volume and size of lips.

    Treatment and Side Effects

Because of Perlane's biocompatibility, you won't need an allergy test prior to treatment. As with all dermal fillers, Perlane is injected under the skin with an ultrafine needle. To minimize any discomfort, your physician may recommend (or you can request) a topical anesthetic, which will numb your skin. The entire procedure usually takes less than half an hour.

Following the injection, some swelling and redness may occur as well as some associated pain. This typically doesn't last longer than a week. A rare side effect is the appearance of red bumps around the injection site. Should any side effects persist, call your doctor.

If you have herpes, the injections may trigger a flare-up, so be sure to let your doctor know if you're prone to such outbreaks. Also if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on blood thinners, you shouldn't have Perlane injected.

    How Long Do Treatments Last?

As with any dermal filler, the longevity of Perlane varies from person to person. On average, however, results tend to last approximately 6 months.

How Much Does the Treatment Cost?

Perlane costs range from $300 to $700 per syringe. How many syringes are needed will depend on the depth of the wrinkles and the size of the area being treated.
