  • Microdermabrasion is a term that refers to a number of devices and techniques that remove a very superficial portion of the skin the stratum corneum, which is the rough, dead layer of protective cells on the very surface of the skin. This is also the layer that houses fine lines and other superficial skin imperfections.

After the dead cells are removed, the skin looks and feels smoother, softer, and more radiant.

    Treatment Techniques

Some microdermabrasion procedures use specialized equipment that emits a stream of tiny, slightly abrasive crystals (such as sodium chloride or aluminum oxide) that gently "buffs" away the dead cells of the stratum corneum. Other microdermabrasion methods use abrasive paddles (sometimes coated with minute diamonds) to remove the dead cells. All the devices simultaneously vacuum up the cells, collecting them for disposal.

The treatment, which generally takes from 20 to 60 minutes (depending on how large an area of skin is being treated), causes little, if any, pain or discomfort. Many people say it feels like a deep facial massage.

    Results

The more aggressive the treatment, the greater the results. How aggressive your treatment will be will depend on your skin and your goals for its appearance. (Microdermabrasion machines come with different-sized tips for diffferent types of skin.) Most people benefit from several treatments, spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart. For optimal effects, microdermabrasion is frequently combined with other skin rejuvenation techniques, such as mild chemical peels.

    Side Effects

You can expect a little bit of redness and swelling for a couple of hours or so after your treatment. In rare cases, microdermabrasion may cause some minor bruising or leave a temporary mark from the suctioning element  of the treatment. But these side effects soon dissipate.
