   Consult with an experienced physician

Wrinkles in and around the areas surrounding the mouth and lips can be some of the most frustrating and unsightly of all wrinkles. When we are speaking often people will watch our mouths and if we are concerned about these lines and wrinkles it can cause us concern. Many of my patients come to me looking for treatment of these problems lines.

Dynamic wrinkles are best treated by using something like Botox ®, which will paralyze those muscles so that they can’t repeatedly produce the wrinkling. In areas of the nasal labial fold, which is the area between the nostril and the upper side of the lateral portion of the lip, those areas are best treated with dermal fillers. There are many different types of fillers out today such as Restylane® or collagen-based fillers which can be used to treat those areas.

Laser Treatment
There are a variety of lasers that can be used to treat smokers’ lines and mouth wrinkles, some of them very non-invasively which we call non-ablative lasers. These lasers treat the underlying layers of skin without damaging the top portion. There are also lasers, ablative lasers, which remove some of the superficial layers of the skin.

The determination as to which treatment is right for you should be made in consultation with a physician who is an expert in skin treatment and has a variety of options to choose from. Not all faces are the same and different patients, even the same patient but different parts of the face, may require differing treatment options. Be sure to consult a physician prior to any cosmetic procedure.
