Fat used as a Filler

What are Fat Fillers?

Injecting fat into the face is known as autologous fat transplantation. During the treatment fat is extracted from the patient's own abdomen, thighs, or buttocks and then injected into the facial skin. This is generally done to fill cheeks or lines around the mouth and nose. It can also be used to create fuller, more enhanced lips.

Fat can be used to enhance the facial wrinkles and lines that are associated with aging. As we age our skin naturally loses some of its fatty tissue, make the skin look more sunken. Also as we age our collagen is damaged by sun exposure and causes the skin to lose it luster. Injectable fillers and fat fillers help address these problems. Since the fat used comes directly from the patient, there is no risk of allergic reaction.

The Treatment

The areas to be injected are generally treated with a topical anesthetic and fat is taken from the donor area and prepared for injection. The area to be treated is then injected with the fat. Some swelling and redness is typical in and around the treatment areas.

Post-Treatment

The amount of swelling and redness will vary based on the individual and the area treated. Some swelling and redness may last up to several weeks. If you experience any pain or extended swelling, contact your doctor.

How long will the results last?

Fat filler may last anywhere from 3 months to a year, depending on the size and area treated. Typically results disappear by six months. Your physician will consult with you to discuss your case and expectations prior to treatment.
