  • Evolence is a collagen dermal filler made of porcine (pig) collagen that mimics the naturally occurring collagen in your skin the collagen that you lose over time. For many years bovine (cow) collagen was harvested for use in humans to correct fine lines and wrinkles. Evolence represents the first time porcine collagen has been harvested for this purpose. Using porcine collagen to treat damaged skin makes medical sense, for porcine materials have been used safely and effectively for several other medical applications, including artificial heart valves and implantable lenses.

Although Evolence is one of the more recent (July 2008) dermal fillers to receive the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it has been used to treat wrinkles successfully in Canada,  Europe and Asia for a number of years.

    What Is the Treatment Like?

Evolence is injected through a fine needle into facial areas with mid to deep wrinkling — especially the nasolabial folds that run from the nose to the mouth. It lifts the skin and smoothes the appearance of the wrinkles. Your physician may recommend that the treatment area be anesthetized to dull any discomfort associated with the injections. Multiple injections may be administered during a single treatment session.

    What Can I Expect Afterward?

Results are immediate and last up to 12 months. Although you may experience minor side effects (typically, mild swelling, discomfort and redness), you can return to your normal daily activities right away. In rare cases, small, temporary lumps or bumps may form beneath the surface of the treatment area.

    What Does the Treatment Cost?

The cost varies by region and by the amount of Evolence needed to treat the targeted facial area. On average, however, the cost for one treatment is around $400. Contact a physician for a more precise estimate.
