Dermal Fillers, Injections, and Injectables

Many different fillers, each with its own characteristics
Some immobilize muscles, others stimulate collagen growth
May be used to treat scars, fine to deep wrinkles, dynamic wrinkles
Length of effectiveness may vary based on product

There has been a proliferation of dermal fillers such as Botox® or Restylane® in the last several years. Each dermal filler is made of a different substance and each lasts for a different length of time.

The most popular dermal fillers these days are the hyaluronic acid based gels such as Restylane®, Perlane®, Hylaform and Juvederm®. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar which binds to water and gives the skin a natural plumpness. By injecting these fillers into the skin, for example in the nasolabial folds around the mouth and nose, we may correct moderate wrinkles on the face or add fullness to the lips.

Then there are others, like collagen-based products, such Cosmoderm® & Cosmoplast®, as well as regular Collagen itself. These filler materials are made from highly purified human collagen and help to diminish wrinkles, scarring and fine lines.

Then you have injectables like Sculptra®, which is a poly-L-lactic acid, or Radiesse®, which is made of calcium hydroxylapatatite suspended in a hyaluronic acid gel, which may be used for deep wrinkles. In some cases results may last 2 years. Your physician may choose one injectable over another based upon the location in the face, potential side-effects, or persistence of the product.

Other Treatments for Aging Skin Include: Laser Skin Resurfacing, Fractional Laser Resurfacing, IPL, Radiofrequency Rejuvenation, Plasma Skin Regeneration or Injectables/ Dermal Fillers.
