  • What Are They?

Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are dermal fillers made from highly purified human collagen. Collagen, a protein, composes the majority of skin (minus water weight). As we age and our skin receives more sun damage, the collagen in our skin becomes degraded. It loses its smoothness and fullness and gradually looks less healthy.

Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. Cosmoderm is generally considered more appropriate for superficial fine lines, such as those in the upper or lower lip areas, while Cosmoplast is well suited for deeper wrinkles. They were both approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003.

Both Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast contain lidocaine, an anesthetic, which numbs the skin at the site of injection.

    Allergy Testing Not Required

Because Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are made with human collagen, you won't need an allergy skin test before undergoing treatment.

How Long Do the Effects Last?

Most people see results immediately following treatment. Generally, the results last for about three months. You'll then need touch-up treatments if you want to maintain the original results.

    Possible Side Effects

You may experience some temporary swelling or redness around the treatment site for one to three days. As with most injectables, bruising may also occur, which may last up to a week. If any side effects become bothersome or last more than several days, you should contact your doctor.

People with known allergies to lidocaine or a history of serious allergic reactions should not use Cosmoderm or Cosmoplast.
