What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein making up 80% of our skin
One of the three main proteins of the skin
Collagen is found throughout our body
DNA changes as sun damages our skin

Collagen is a protein that comprises 80% of our skin. There are three main components to the extra cellular matrix of our skin. There is collagen, and there are many forms of collagen, elastic fibers and you have GAGs, Glycosaminoglycans.

Collagen is the main structural protein of our skin and one of the main structural proteins of our body. Collagen provides strength and elastic fibers provide the ability to stretch and recoil, which is the genesis of the term “elasticity”. As collagen and the elastic fibers get damaged by the sun, our skin sags, may turn color and generally doesn’t have as good an appearance.

The Sun 'Flips' the DNA Switch

As we expose our skin to the sun over time, the sunlight activates genes that are already in our skin and causes them to function in an abnormal way, producing damaged-looking skin. Skin treatments may reverse this process by creating newer-looking skin.
