Collagen "Replacement" Therapy |
|
Collagen is the main protein in our skin. As we age, our collagen becomes damaged by the sun, making our skin look less healthy and youthful. The skin also begins to sag and wrinkle. Collagen fillers like Zyderm and Zyplast serve as a kind of "replacement therapy" for our skin. They help restore volume to the skin — and thus smooth out wrinkles and lift up small depressions caused by scars. Collagen fillers are also helpful for giving lips better definition. |
A Three-Decade-Long Track RecordIt's been almost 30 years since the Food and Drug Administration approved Zyderm and Zyplast collagen for cosmetic treatments in the United States. These fillers, which contain purified bovine collagen, have been used in more than 1.5 million treatments since then.
Zyderm comes in two formulations. Zyderm II contains about twice the concentration of collagen as Zyderm I. Zyderm I, therefore, is typically used for more superficial fine lines and wrinkles, while Zyderm II is generally used on more moderate scarring and wrinkles. Zyplast is cross-linked with a colorless organic compound called glutaraldehyde, which gives the filler a denser composition and makes it less prone to degradation. It's used on more severe wrinkling and scarring.
How Long Do They Last?Zyderm I may last from 6 weeks to 3 months. Zyderm II may last 4 to 5 months. Zyplast may last 9 months to 1 year.
What to Expect During TreatmentBefore undergoing collagen treatment, you'll be given a skin test to make sure you're not allergic to any substances in the formulations. Thus, you won't be able to undergo treatment on the same day as your consultation. For the treatment itself, your physician will inject the collagen at various points along the edge of the targeted wrinkles or scars, using a very fine needle. Both fillers have built-in numbing agents to minimize any discomfort, but you'll probably feel a slight stinging or burning sensation in the injected area. The procedure will be over in a matter of minutes, however, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately.
Cost of Collagen InjectionsThe cost per treatment session can run from $350 to $500, depending on how much filler is used. That factor will depend, of course, on your particular skin's needs.
Possible Side EffectsYou may experience some minor swelling, bruising and tenderness in the treated area. Zyplast may also cause temporary bumps to form under the skin. As with all dermal filler treatments, if you notice any symptoms after several days, you should contact your doctor.
