Collagen Injections

What is Zyderm & Zyplast Collagen?

One method of repairing the appearance of our skin is by injecting purified bovine collagen directly into our skin. Collagen is a main protein in our skin, and as we age our collagen is damaged by the sun and begins to look less healthy and youthful. Collagen can be used to fill in deeper wrinkles, fine lines, as well as scars such as acne scarring.

Injectable collagen was patented by the Collagen Corporation under the trade names Zyderm® and Zyplast® and received FDA approval in 1981.

Zyderm I is a formula of 25% bovine collagen, 0.3% lidocaine. It is typically used for more superficial fines lines and wrinkles. Zyderm II is 50% bovine collagen, 0.3% lidocaine, and is generally used on more moderate scarring and wrinkles. Zyplast is used on the more severe wrinkling and scarring, and has a more dense composition.

How Long Do they Last?

Zyplast I is said to last anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months.

Zyplast II may last 4 to 5 months.

Zyderm can last 9 months to 1 year.

During the Treatment

Before receiving collagen injections your physician should do a test patch on your skin to see if you are allergic to the substances that make up the collagen injections. If your doctor determines that you are not allergic, treatment will begin. Treatment with collagen consists of your doctor using a fine needle and inserting the injections at several different points along the treatment area. Generally a patient may feel a slight stinging or burning sensation during the treatment session.

Cost of Collagen Injections

The cost per treatment session can run anywhere from $350 to $500 per cc injected.

Post-Treatment

Immediately after the injections are administered there may be some discomfort, stinging or pain around the treatment area. In some cases bruising may also follow, but is usually minor. This should pass within a few days and any associated swelling will also pass. If you notice the symptoms after several days, it is advisable to contact your doctor.

Results from Collagen

Typically fine lines and wrinkles will be noticeably smaller and less defined after treatment. The length of time the treatments are effective depends on your individual case and should be discussed with your doctor. Generally patients see effective results for two to three months.

Alternative injectables for treating wrinkles include: Artefill, Botox, Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm, Fat Fillers, CosmoDerm & CosmoPlast and Perlane.
