"Chemical peel" is a broad term that is used to refer to a chemical treatment of the skin. In most "chemical peels" nothing actually "peels" off. There are chemical peels that can be used which can remove the whole surface of the skin, in a manner similar to CO2 or Erbium lasers. Those peels are the deep chemical peels, which in my opinion are not used as frequently today as they used to be, having been in large part replaced by laser skin rejuvenation.
Type of Peels
Phenol peels, a deeper chemical peel which may remove the upper layers of the skin, can create a wound on the skin which then stimulates the skin's healing causing new skin to emerge. Just as with a CO2 laser, there is a risk with phenol peels of some whitening of the skin, known as hypopigmentation.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are another type of peel that, depending on the concentration, may be a deep or superficial peel which also removes the surface of the skin and allows new skin to come back and heal over in its place.
Results
With a chemical peel you get some tightening of the skin, you get improvements of pre-cancerous and brown spots, and a general resurfacing of the skin. Its important, however, to consult with an experienced physician before having any treatments performed.
Some Wrinkle & Anti-Aging Treatments Include: Laser Skin Resurfacing, Fractional Laser Resurfacing, IPL, Radiofrequency Rejuvenation, Plasma Skin Regeneration or Injectables/ Dermal Fillers.
