What is Artefill®?

What is Artefill®?

Artefill® is the first FDA-approved dermal filler which is not absorbed by the body's natural processes. It is typically used to treat the 'smile lines' around the mouth. It is made of 20% PMMA microspheres and 80% purified bovine collagen (as well as 0.3% lidocaine).

As we age, our skin loses its natural volume due to loss of fatty tissue as well as the sun damage which contributes to wrinkles and fine lines. Injectable fillers like Artefill help correct these issues by increasing skin volume and smoothing skin.

How is it Performed?

A physician administers the injection through a needle into the area being treated. A skin test should be performed prior to treatment to determine if you are allergic to the lidocaine anesthetic or the bovine collagen.

Once you have had a skin test, the physician will inject the Artefill just beneath the wrinkle above the skin fat layer. Generally patients will see results immediately following treatment.

Risks

As with any filler, reddening and swelling post-treatment side effects are typical. Bruising is also possible. In rare cases, itching and rashes may appear, as well as granulomas or lumping.

Patients who have skin rashes, lesions, hives or bumps should not receive treatment with Artefill until the skin condition clears. Artefill's safety or effectiveness after one year are yet to be determined. Be sure to consult with your physician about all the possible side-effects prior to any treatment.

Alternative injectables for treating wrinkles include: Botox, Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm, Fat Fillers, CosmoDerm & CosmoPlast and Perlane.
